Ηistory and tradition
If you wish to take a trip back in time to learn more about the history of the island, then this private tour is perfect for you. Through this personalized private tour, you will walk in the “footsteps” of other, bygone eras, reaching back to the distant 2nd to 3rd century BC.
Your journey can start from the highest point of the island, on the Pantokrator Mountain, where the historic Monastery of Pantokrator dominates.
Τhe Monastery of Pantokrator has one of the most picturesque views of Corfu, the surrounding islands and the mainland. The Monastery of Pantokrator was first built on top of the mountain in the 14th century, in 1347, with the consent of 23 villages of Mount Pantokrator. It was destroyed in 1537, and the current building dates from the late 17th century, so it has a more modern layout. The Monastery of Pantokrator, which once had life, is now permanently inhabited by no monks.
On August 6, on the occasion of the celebration of Pantokrator, crowds of people flock there day and night and ascend the mountain with lighted candles, which can be seen from afar.
From the holy monastery of the 17th century, your journey takes you further backwards to a place with a long history, the ghost village of Old Perithia.
In the today abandoned village of Old Perithia, you can feel like walking in the “footsteps” of other, bygone eras, among natural beauty and a unique architectural wealth as the atmosphere and culture of another era is preserved unchanged.
It is well hidden in the heart of Mount Pantokrator and is the oldest village of the island. Ruined stone mansions, half-ruined temples with silent bell towers and narrow cobbled streets, make up the landscape of the village of Old Perithia, whose history begins around the 3rd century BC.
In the village square called “Foro”, you will discover traditional taverns in the village square, reminiscent of old stone houses, and you will feel as if you are eating in the house of a family from another era.
Your final destination for this trip has a sense of intimacy and relaxation, thanks to its scenic beauty. Of course, it could be none other than the cosmopolitan village of Kassiopi. This small picturesque fishing village counts 1200 inhabitants and is dominated by a Roman fortress.
In Roman times it was a prosperous village as it was on the naval route and nowadays it turns out to be a village with its own charm, centre, picturesque harbour, 2 bays with beaches separated by a cape and the ruins of a Byzantine castle.
It is a traditional village that preserves its natural beauty, while at the same time highlighting its modernized side, as it has all kinds of shops and restaurants, many of which specialize in fish. It is an ideal place to relax and enjoy the local cuisine.
