Paleokastritsa has been described as the jewel of Corfu, consisting of a series of beaches separated by small capes.
On the top of the hill on the western of the two small capes in front of the beaches, is the beautiful 12th century monastery of Theotokos. This monastery dominates the whole region. Built on top of a remote hill, it gives a gorgeous view of the island and the sea.
This Byzantine Monastery dates back to 1228, however the current complex, the cells of the monks and the yard date from the 18th century. The monastery has a small ecclesiastical museum with rare Byzantine icons, holy books, and other relics. Inside the monastery, there works a traditional olive oil press.
here is the famous icon of the Virgin Mary in its church. In this church, also kept in a large glass box, are the bones of a whale that was stranded many years ago on the rocks below the monastery.
Also, there is a well in the upper courtyard of the Paleokastritsa Monastery. According to local legend, anyone who throws coins into the well will return to Corfu. In recent years, couples have started another custom of locking padlocks on the railing outside the monastery at the lookout point, thus “locking” their love for eternity.
Above Paleokastritsa, is the village of Lakones, with a breathtakingly beautiful view. Near the village of Lakones, there is the Bella Vista area, famous for its stunning panoramic views of the sea, the bays of Paleokastritsa and the coast of the island.
